Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. Orthodontic treatment can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal with the control and modification of facial growth. ln the latter case it is better known as "dentofacial orthopedics".
Why do dental and facial irregularities occur? Most cases are inherited but some are acquired conditions caused by bad habits. Irregularities such as: narrow arch, crowding of teeth, wide gap between teeth, extra or missing teeth, cleft palate, narrow airway caused by swollen tonsils or adenoid, premature loss of milk teeth are found as a result of bad habits, which includes mouth breathing, thumb or finger sucking, and tongue thrusting. Those acquired conditions will later affect not only the alignment of teeth but also the natural beauty of facial appearance.
Why is orthodontic treatment important? Firstly, it is difficult to clean crooked teeth. Unclean teeth shall contribute to unhealthy conditions such as: tooth decay, gum disease and sometimes even tooth loss. Abnormal dentition may also cause shabby tooth surfaces, excess stress on supporting bone and gum tissue or unbalanced jaw joints with resultant chronic headaches or pains in the face or neck.
